The Cyber Defense department hosts multiple on-campus events and meetings open to students and faculty, as well as actively participating in on-campus events hosted by the Riverside City College student body that are open to the community. Students are encouraged to engage and participate in the clubs on campus including our Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) Club Student Chapter and Cybersecurity Club. There, students can interact with peers who are pursing similar career paths, participate in hands-on student led demonstrations and tutorials, and participate in open discussions about cyber related topics and how we can help make the industry more inclusive and diverse.  Our students actively participate in multiple cybersecurity competition and have won multiple awards. We also host local events for K-12 students such as our Girl Scout Cyber Badge Day and our annual CyberPatriot Summer Cyber Camp where our students volunteer to help teach kids about cybersecurity and how to protect themselves online.

Conferences and Local Events

Our campus hosts an annual CyberPatriot (https://www.uscyberpatriot.org/) Standard and Advanced Cyber Camp for high school students every Summer. CyberPatriot is the National Youth Cyber Education Program created by the Air & Space Forces Association to teach students how to protect themselves online and inspire K-12 students toward careers in cybersecurity or other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines critical to our nation's future. There is a Standard Camp for first time students and the Advanced Camp for the students who already participated in the Standard Camp. Each camp lasts for one week and ends with the students competing in a cyber competition that involves all the material they learned that week. The program is designed to encourage cyber-savvy volunteers to give back to their communities. Multiple RCC students in the Cyber Defense program volunteer for both camps.

Beginning in 2020, the RCC Cyber Defense Program began hosting a Girl Scout Badge Day where local girl scouts would come in and learn about cybersecurity. They were taught about net safety, cracking codes and passwords, multifactor authentication, and different types of cyber-attacks. This was done by student-led lectures and hands on activities and games. At the end of the day after completing the activities, the girl scouts would earn their cyber badge.

Every year, the Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) National Organization hosts an annual conference where members gather and are given access to workshops, speakers, and a career fair filled with hundreds of companies, organizations, and government agencies. Our Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) Student Chapter Club has been attending the conference since 2020 and each time brings back valuable information to their members about potential internships and other resources.

Cybersecurity in the News

NSA Program of Study Validation
cae logoRiverside City College’s Information Security and Cyber Defense program has achieved CAE-CD validation from the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The validation confirms that the program curriculum meets the standards put forth by the NSA and Department of Defense in articulating effective Cybersecurity education. It further solidifies that the coursework within the program aligns with and meets criteria related to knowledge units developed as part of the US government’s focus areas. The NSA evaluates and accredits institutions that offer cyber security degrees and curricula. CAE-CD validation is a rigorous and prestigious process performed by security experts and other institutions. Students completing the program enter a high-demand field, knowing that they completed requirements for the CAE-CD program of study. Doing so, further improves their career opportunities. Students who graduate after June 2022 can obtain a certificate for completing the CAE-CD Program of Study. The program’s validation will run through June of 2027 and can be renewed. After having our Cyber Defense program validated by the NSA, Riverside City College has now been designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the NSA.

CyberSmarties

placeholderStarting the FALL 2021 semester, the RCC WiCyS Student Chapter has held an annual CyberSmarties Booth once a week during the month of October to spread awareness during Cybersecurity Awareness Month.

There, students and faculty can come up to the booth and answer some cyber trivia each week to be entered into a drawing to win a prize. The topics vary each week from protecting your personal information, social media safety, phishing, and more! Each week, we teach students and faculty the different ways they can protect their personal information while browsing the internet. This event has been such a success that our student government body has asked us to host this event twice a year to starting Spring 2023!

Empire Tech Toy Drive

placeholderDuring the FALL 2021 semester, the RCC WiCyS Student Chapter and the RCC Cybersecurity Club teamed up to spread joy and assist Empire Technologies in their Holiday Toy Drive for Olive Crest of the Inland Empire.

Olive Crest of the Inland Empire “helps abused and neglected children and teens. From getting that child into the loving home they deserve - to getting that teen the proper counseling after experiencing trauma, Olive Crest does it all!” With our joined efforts, we were able to donate 150 unwrapped/new toys and spread some holiday joy!
